New info Channel catfish in upstream battle: In March, the Iowa Senate unanimously approved a joint resolution honoring the channel catfish as Iowa's state fish. Looking like Iowa would finally have an official state fish, Senate Joint Resolution No. 2 has been slowed by amendments in the Iowa House. House Amendment 1592, sponsored by Representatives Scott Raecker and Dolores Murtz, substituted the bluegill for the channel catfish. Representative Mike May countered with House Amendment 1616, substituting the "chocolate chip cookie" for the channel catfish? Chokecherry: Governor John Hoeven today (03/29/07) was joined by legislators, educators, and Mrs. Nancy Selby's sixth grade class from Rickard Elementary School at the State Capitol to sign Senate Bill 2145, legislation making the native chokecherry (prunus virginiana) North Dakota's official state fruit.
