This elevation map of Montana illustrates the number of feet or meters the state rises above sea level. As you can see, the entire State of Montana resides at more than 1,000 feet above sea level. Lower areas of Montana are found in the valleys of the Missouri and the Yellowstone Rivers on the eastern border of the state. From east to west, the land rises to the Rocky Mountains along the border of Idaho, but...

The lowest point in Montana is located in the northwestern part of the state. The Kootenai River, which flows into Montana from Canada, through a portion of northern Idaho and back into Canada, reaches a state low point of 1,800 feet above sea level in Lincoln County.

The highest point in Montana is found in the south-central part of the state. Granite Peak, about 75 miles southwest of Billings and ten miles from the Wyoming border, rises 12,799 feet above sea level. Part of the Beartooth Mountain Range, Granite Peak is located in Park County and straddles the boundary between the Gallatin and Custer National Forests.
