Blount, Governor of the State of Tennessee (1809-1815), who assisted Alabama settlers during the Creek War of 1813-1814. Governor Blount sent militia under Andrew Jackson to Alabama Territory to retaliate against the "Red Stick" Creeks after the Fort Mims massacre of August 30, 1813. Blount of Tennessee, for whose timely aid in 1813 in sending troops against the Creeks the people of Alabama owe such a debt of gratitude." Blount County was created from land given up to the United States Government by the Creek Indians in the Treaty with the Creeks, August 9, 1814. This treaty, signed at Fort Jackson, near Wetumpka, Alabama, is also known as the Treaty of Fort Jackson. In this treaty that came at the end of hostilities between the Upper Creek resistance and U.S. forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, the Creek Nation ceded 23 million acres of Creek land in Alabama and Georgia to the United States Government.
